How to Clean Wheel Rims and Wheel Spokes?

Oct 28, 2025 Leave a message

During off-road driving, wheel rims and spokes often become covered with mud, rainwater, brake dust, oil stains, and even chemical deicers. If not cleaned regularly, these substances can directly corrode metal components.
For example, brake dust has certain corrosive properties. Long-term accumulation on the rim surface can oxidize the coating, causing spots, peeling, and reduced durability and appearance.
Acidic or alkaline materials in mud may seep into the spoke bolts and rim joints, leading to rusted screws, loosened connections between spokes and rims, and decreased wheel assembly stability.
Therefore, off-road vehicle users should regularly inspect and clean the rims to ensure driving safety.

I. Preparation Before Cleaning

Choose a wheel cleaner specifically designed for automotive use. Avoid using overly strong acidic or alkaline products to prevent damage to the rim's surface coating.
In addition to the cleaner, prepare tools such as a soft-bristle brush, gloves, a high-pressure water gun, and clean towels.
It is best to clean the wheels after they have cooled down, as spraying cleaner on hot rims may cause chemical reactions that damage the surface.

II. Step-by-Step Cleaning

1. Pre-rinsing and Softening
Use a high-pressure water gun to rinse from the inside of the rim outward, removing dust, mud, and large debris.
Focus on cleaning the gaps between spokes and the junction between the rim and tire-areas prone to dirt buildup.
After rinsing, evenly spray the wheel cleaner over the rim and spokes. Let it sit for 1–2 minutes (do not exceed the time specified in the product instructions) to soften stubborn brake dust and grease.

2. Targeted Brushing
Use different tools for different areas to ensure thorough cleaning without blind spots.
For the spoke surface, gently wipe with a car wash mitt to avoid scratching.
For gaps between spokes, use a fine detailing brush to reach narrow spaces and remove embedded brake dust and grime.
The inner rim surface tends to accumulate the most dirt-use a spoke brush to reach inside along the curve of the rim, focusing on the oily area near the brake disc.

3. Thorough Rinsing
Use the high-pressure water gun again to rinse from inside to outside, ensuring all cleaner and dirt are completely washed away with no residue.
After rinsing, wipe the rim and spokes dry with a clean towel to prevent water spots caused by evaporation, especially in direct sunlight or high temperatures.

III. Important Notes

Use cleaners suitable for the specific material of your wheel rims.

Do not mix tools used for cleaning rims with those for cleaning the car body, as dirt or grit from the rims may scratch the paint.

Rim manufacturers recommend regular cleaning of rims and spokes to prevent long-term brake dust accumulation and corrosion.
