Description

The rim groove ring is a part of the wheel rim-an inwardly recessed, annular groove located between the outer and inner rims. Its defining feature is the circular depression in the middle of the rim, primarily designed to facilitate tire installation and enhance performance.

The main function of the rim groove ring is to make tire mounting and dismounting easier. During installation, the tire bead can first be positioned into the recessed groove and then gradually moved toward both rim flanges. This prevents the bead from being overly stretched due to high rim edges, which could make installation difficult. This is especially important for tubeless tires, which rely on air pressure to "snap" the bead into place against the rim flanges to form an airtight seal-the rim groove rings help reduce the difficulty of this process.

Additionally, when tire pressure is insufficient, the bead may shift due to lateral forces. The drop center can temporarily "hold" the bead in place, reducing the risk of bead dislodgement.

Common Types and Characteristics

1. Deep Well Rim
Structure: The groove is deep, with symmetrical rim heights on both sides and a narrow groove bottom width.
Features:
Single tyre installation is convenient, as the tyre can be slid into the groove from one side without removing the hub, and then inflated to expand the tyre bead to the rim position.
It is primarily suitable for small vehicles, sedans, and light trucks.

2. Flat Base Rim with Well
Structure: The rim bottom is flat, with the groove located on one side, and the outer flange height is slightly higher than the inner flange.
Features:
It can accommodate both tubeless and tubed tyres. The flat-bottom design is suitable for heavy-duty vehicles such as trucks and buses. The groove assists in tyre bead positioning.
Some heavy-duty rims have shallower grooves, primarily to provide operational space during tyre installation and removal.

3. Split Rim
Structure: The rim is divided into two halves connected by bolts, with the groove located at the joint surface.
Features:
It is a disassemblable rim, facilitating the installation of extra-wide tyres or special-specification tyres, such as those used in construction machinery.
Sealing relies on bolt tightening and sealant; improper installation may cause air leaks. It is currently primarily used in industrial vehicles.
