 Safety risks: Oxidation thins rim walls and weakens structural integrity. Off-road vehicles encountering rough terrain or heavy loads may experience rim deformation or fracture.

 Operational Failures: Peeling oxidation layers may cause poor tire-rim contact, leading to slow leaks and unstable tire pressure. Severely rusted steel rims may jam tires, making removal difficult.

Economic Losses:Mild oxidation requires maintenance costs, while severe oxidation necessitates rim replacement, increasing operational expenses.

 

How to Address Rim Oxidation?

 

(1) Mild Oxidation

Applicable Scenarios: Slightly dulled wheel surfaces with minor spotting, no peeling or rust, intact coating.

1. Tool Preparation

  • Cleaning Tools: High-pressure water gun, neutral car wash detergent, soft-bristle brush (to avoid surface scratches), degreaser (for oil removal)
  • Oxidation Removal: Aluminum alloy oxidation removal paste, steel wheel rust remover (mildly acidic to prevent corrosion), stainless steel cleaner
  • Protection: Wheel-specific protective wax, coating agent, rust-preventive oil (for steel wheels)

2. Procedure

  1. Thorough Cleaning: Rinse wheel surfaces with high-pressure water to remove dirt. Apply neutral car wash detergent and scrub crevices with a soft-bristle brush. Finally, use degreaser to remove oil stains. Rinse thoroughly with water and dry.
  2. Oxidation Removal:
  3. Aluminum Alloy Wheels: Apply oxidation removal paste evenly to oxidized areas. Let sit for 5-10 minutes. Rub repeatedly with a soft cloth until oxidation disappears. Rinse clean with water.
  4. Steel Rims: Spray rust remover on rusted areas, let sit for 3-5 minutes (avoid prolonged contact), brush off loose rust, then rinse with clean water.
  5. Stainless Steel Rims: Wipe oxidation spots with stainless steel cleaner, rinse with clean water, then dry with a dry cloth.

 

(2) Moderate Oxidation

Applicable Scenarios: Localized peeling of the oxidation layer on the wheel rim, visible rust stains, coating damage but no deformation of the substrate.

1. Tool Preparation

Grinding Tools: 800-grit / 1000-grit / 1500-grit sandpaper (progressively finer), angle grinder (with flap disc for large-area oxidation removal)

Auxiliary Tools: Masking film (to protect tires), spray gun / brush, drying equipment (or air-dry).

2. Procedure

Remove the wheel rim: Detach the rim from the vehicle and separate the tire.

Sand the oxidation layer: Start with 800-grit sandpaper to grind the oxidized areas, removing the oxidation layer and damaged coating until the bright metal substrate is exposed. If scratches or dents are present, fill with body filler. After drying, sand smooth with 1000-grit sandpaper, then polish with 1500-grit sandpaper to remove sanding marks.

Degrease and Dust Removal: Wipe the wheel surface with a degreaser to remove oil and dust, ensuring the surface is clean and free of contaminants.

Spray Repair:

  1. Step 1: Apply rust-proof primer: Spray evenly 1-2 coats, allowing 15-20 minutes between coats. After drying, lightly sand with 1500-grit sandpaper.
  2. Step 2: Apply topcoat: Select high-temperature paint matching the original wheel color. Spray 2-3 coats, allowing 20 minutes between coats.
  3. Step 3: Apply clear coat: Spray 1-2 coats to enhance gloss and abrasion resistance. Allow to air dry naturally or use low-temperature baking (max 80°C) to prevent substrate deformation.

 

Assembly and Testing: After full paint curing (typically 24 hours), mount the tire. Inflate to test for airtightness. Confirm no leaks before installing on the vehicle.

 

(3) Severe Oxidation

Applicable Scenarios: Extensive flaking of the rim's oxidation layer, rust perforations, substrate deformation (e.g., ovalization, cracks), or oxidation depth exceeding 0.5mm.

In such cases, replace the rim immediately; do not continue using it.

Oxidation on off-road wheels results from material properties and environmental factors. Mild oxidation can be restored through cleaning, de-oxidation, and protective coating. Moderate oxidation requires grinding and coating repair, while severe oxidation necessitates rim replacement to ensure safety.
