What Is a Two-Piece Wheel Rim and How Does It Work?

A two-piece wheel rim is a modular heavy-duty rim made of two independent parts: the center hub section and the rim barrel. Unlike one-piece integrated rims, these two parts are assembled together, usually by high-strength bolts or full penetration welding. It is widely used for loaders, dump trucks, underground mining equipment and other construction and mining machinery.

Main Components

1. Center section

This part includes the mounting flange, bolt holes and hub connection surface. It transfers torque and bearing load from the axle to the rim barrel. All bolt circle, center bore and offset parameters are processed according to the axle requirements.

2. Rim barrel

It is the outer circular part with bead seats and flanges. Its job is to hold the OTR tire beads, maintain air tightness and resist impact from rocks and uneven ground.

How It Works

When the equipment moves, load and driving force pass through the axle hub to the center section of the two-piece rim. The center section then distributes the force evenly to the rim barrel through the connecting joint. The barrel locks the tire beads firmly, so the tire can carry weight and absorb ground shock.

For bolted two-piece rims, pre-torque on connecting bolts keeps the center and barrel tightly matched. No relative slip is allowed under repeated impact load. For welded two-piece rims, the welding seam forms a rigid whole. Stress is shared by both parts instead of concentrating on a single area.

This split structure brings a core practical advantage: tire mounting and dismounting become easier. Operators do not need to pull the whole rim off the axle for tire service. It also supports separate replacement. If only the barrel gets worn or cracked, you can replace the barrel instead of changing the entire rim assembly.

Two-Piece Rim vs One-Piece Rim

Item Two-Piece Wheel Rim One-Piece Wheel Rim
Structure Center + barrel, assembled Single integrated steel body
Tire service Easier to mount and demount OTR tires Harder for large-size tires
Repair option Replace barrel or center separately Replace full rim once damaged
Sealing risk Check connecting bolts and joint regularly Fewer leakage points
Typical use Mining loader, articulated dump truck Light construction machinery, forklift

Key Operating Notes

  • Follow specified torque value for bolted two-piece rims; uneven tightening causes vibration and bolt failure.
  • Inspect seams or bolt joints every regular maintenance cycle for cracks, deformation and air leakage.
  • Do not mix parts from different rim batches. Mismatched center and barrel will cause assembly failure and safety risks.
  • Anqiang produces two-piece rims with rolled steel barrels and high-strength center plates. We can adjust size, load rating and surface coating based on your working site.

The two-piece rim balances strength, serviceability and cost for heavy off-road equipment. It is not a complicated design, but its modular layout solves many pain points of large OTR tire maintenance.
