Two-piece wheel rims are widely used on mining loaders, dump trucks and heavy construction machinery. Proper installation and routine maintenance directly prevent rim separation, bead leakage and sudden failure under heavy load.
What Is a Two-Piece Wheel Rim
A two-piece rim consists of a rim base and a removable side flange / lock ring. Unlike one-piece welded rims, it allows convenient tire removal without cutting the tire. It is common for OTR heavy-duty equipment working in mines, quarries and earthmoving sites. All parts must be matched by marking stamps; never mix components from different rim models.
Pre-Installation Checklist
Check every part before assembly. Damaged parts cannot be reused.
| Item | Check Points | Action If Failed |
|---|---|---|
| Rim base | Cracks, bent bead seat, corrosion pits, worn lock groove | Replace immediately |
| Lock ring / flange | Deformation, chip, fatigue crack, poor spring tension | Replace |
| O-ring / seal | Hardening, cuts, aging, permanent deformation | Replace with new seal |
| Mating surface | Rubber residue, rust, burrs | Clean with wire brush, remove burrs |
| Matching mark | Stamp numbers on all components match | Stop assembly if mismatched |
Step-by-Step Installation
Clean all bead seats, lock groove and contact surfaces completely. No sand, rust or old rubber left on sealing areas.
Fit the new O-ring evenly into the groove. Use approved tire bead lubricant. Do not stretch or twist the seal.
Place the tire bead onto the rim base. Avoid sharp tools that nick the bead or rim surface.
Install the side flange and lock ring. Seat the lock ring fully into the groove. Tap gently with a soft hammer along the circumference to confirm full seating.
Inflate the tire slowly inside a safety cage. Stop inflation once the lock ring jumps out of position. Do not stand in front of the rim during inflation.
Check lock ring seating again after reaching working pressure. Confirm no gap or offset around the ring.
Mount the whole wheel onto the hub. Clean hub contact face. Tighten wheel nuts in star sequence to the torque value specified by Anqiang. Recheck torque after the first 2 hours of operation.
Routine Maintenance Schedule
Field maintenance follows usage intensity, not just calendar time.
Daily: Check air pressure, seal leakage, visible cracks on lock ring and rim flange. Watch for abnormal vibration.
Weekly: Retorque wheel nuts, check for rust accumulation at lock ring groove.
Monthly: Full visual inspection of bead seat and lock ring. Clean dirt from gap between flange and rim base.
Quarterly: Conduct dye penetrant inspection on high-stress areas if the rim works under continuous heavy mining load.
After impact or overload: Dismount and inspect the whole rim set. Do not keep running after hitting rocks or curbs.
Common Risks & Mistakes to Avoid
Mixing rim parts with different stamped sizes is the top safety hazard.
Reusing old O-rings. Most air leakage cases come from worn seals instead of tires.
Over-lubrication or using oil-based lubricant. Oil speeds rubber aging.
Skipping the safety cage during inflation. A loose lock ring can fly out with huge force.
Painting or welding on load-bearing areas of the rim. Welding changes material strength and causes hidden cracks.
Ignoring torque recheck after installation. Loose nuts lead to rim wobble and seal damage.
Signs That You Need to Replace the Two-Piece Rim
Stop using the rim once you find any of these:
Visible cracks on bead seat, lock groove or flange
Permanent deformation after heavy impact
Deep corrosion pits on load-carrying surface
Lock ring cannot stay seated after reassembly
Leakage persists after multiple seal replacement
