Desert transporter is a kind of special vehicle adapted to the extreme desert environment, and its design needs to take full account of the characteristics of loose sand, complex terrain and harsh climate. Rims, as key components, also have special requirements. Desert driving needs to overcome the resistance of sand grains and frequent trapping, so it needs to be equipped with a high-power, high-torque engine to ensure that it can also output enough power at low speeds. When choosing tyres, desert transporters are usually equipped with wide, low-pressure tyres to increase the grounding area, lower the pressure on the sand and reduce sinking. The rim, as an important part of the wheel that mounts and supports the tyre around the periphery, has strict requirements on its performance.
Desert Rim Requirements
1. High strength and wear-resistant material
The material of desert rims is generally aluminium alloy or forged steel, compared with ordinary rims, its tensile strength, deformation resistance is stronger, and can withstand the frequent impact of sand particles in the desert and the twisting force of complex road conditions, to avoid cracking or deformation of the rims.
The surface of the rim needs to be anodised, plated or sprayed with anti-corrosion coating to enhance the resistance to sand abrasion and rust.
2. Structural design adapted to low-pressure tyres
The rim width matches the tyre and is usually wider than normal rims to support wide tyres and increase the grounding area. At the same time, the rim edge is designed with deep groove or flange structure to prevent the tyre from falling off the rim under low pressure.
The combination surface of rim and tyre has high precision and usually needs to be matched with rubber sealing ring to ensure stable tyre pressure under low pressure condition and avoid getting trapped in the car due to insufficient tyre pressure caused by air leakage.
3. Sand resistance and easy maintenance
The rim bolt holes, mounting surface and other parts are designed with smooth structure to reduce sand accumulation. Some of the rims adopt 'tubeless' design to prevent the inner tyre from being worn out by sand particles, and at the same time, it is easy to clean up the adhering sand and dust.
The rims are designed to be as lightweight as possible to reduce the load on the vehicle while maintaining its strength. The rim structure is easy to dismantle and maintain, and can be quickly dismantled and replaced when it gets stuck in the sand or when parts are damaged.
4. Adaptation of the tyre pressure regulation system
If the vehicle is equipped with a central inflator and deflator system, the rims need to be integrated into the design of the inflator and deflator to ensure that the sealing and structural stability of the rims and tyres are not affected by frequent adjustments of the tyre pressure.
